Getting back to my questions above, regarding what we all expect from a restored D'ni, let me jot down these ideas:
1. Have a D'ni interpretive center where future visitors can get to know the D'ni culture through their writings, art, artifacts, etc. Seems to me that the Museum would be an ideal place for this. We could display a multitude of artifacts, have informational exhibits on outstanding figures in D'ni history, perhaps even have some small theaters for multimedia presentations on D'ni history and culture.
2. Set one of the 'hoods apart as a "living village" where volunteers could carry on life as known by the D'ni of old. Use the Community Room for lectures, exhibits, etc... open cafes serving whatever D'ni food we can research, providing we can access the Ages where the food sources were procured in the first place.
3. In a similar vein, designate a 'hood as a D'ni craft center where such articles as clothing, replica KIs, goggles, and other D'ni regalia can be reproduced. The sale of these articles would help fund further restoration work, cover operating costs, etc.
4. Have a multimedia lab in-cavern where DVDs, CDs, books, etc. can be published for visitors. Again, sales could help defray operating costs.
And so forth. Again, remember that although we may try to replicate the lives of the D'ni, we can never actually be D'ni. So how far would we want to go trying to replicate this culture, now that the people themselves have moved on, never to return? There's just something unsettling about surface dwellers attempting to mimic the D'ni. Wouldn't it be best to avoid trying to be them, and just settle for interpreting their history and culture to our fellow surface-dwellers?
Oh, there's the matter of the Ages... what part will they play in the future plans for D'ni? The DRC will be in charge of the Cavern for the foreseeable future, I presume, at least until everything is stabilized and made safe; but what about the Ages? Yeesha gave us access, so we certainly know about them. Will linking books be available to Cavern visitors? Goodness only knows what kind of legalities would be involved there!
Anyway, I still think that looking farther ahead could prevent much of the argument we've been seeing.
Mowog
Was machen wir dann?
